If you plan to play this game, know that it is basically a completely different game from its Japanese counterpart. Great game if you like Ace Combat, just know that literally every game that came after it has way better gameplay.

I really enjoy the quintessentially 90's look this game has. Hardware limitations make it pretty hard to see some enemy aircraft, especially against the night sky, but UI elements have you covered. If you can clearly see the enemy's jet, you're too close anyways and your shot will probably miss. Probably not the most graphically advanced game of its time but it's got animated cutscenes and character video calls by the studio that did the Ghost in the Shell movie.

Sound: 10
Great music. It's got amen break samples and synth pads, what more can you ask for from a game from the 90's? Shame the OST's not on Spotify or other music streaming services, I would love to listen to the soundtrack while working.

Gameplay: 5
There is a steep learning curve if you come from later Ace Combat games because the controls will fight you at every turn and even basic tasks like lining your plane up with your target's ass can be very painful. It's not entirely alien though, it's the same control scheme it's just a very primitive version of the Ace Combat character control. Even with analog control, it's like trying to fly with an 8-way arcade joystick. It's stiff and you just don't feel like you're as in-control as you would playing any of the Ace Combats that came after this.

Overall: 8
Not a bad game if you're into PS1 games. I'd say it's largely non-essential if you're getting into Ace Combat and there's really not much you'd get from playing it that you couldn't from a wiki article, but if you want to check it out, go for it. Not a bad game, it's got a cool story and multiple endings, it just kinda feels bad to play sometimes.
