Battle Chess is certainly a different approach to make chess more fun or appealing by animating the movement of the pieces. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite measure up.

Graphics: 8
The animations of the characters are all beautifully detailed. The only problem is that there is no way to speed up the 3D animations, and to play the game with any sort of speed, one must turn them off completely by switching back to 2D mode. The game loses some enjoyment factor due to this. However, the fight scenes are refreshing and often humorous!

Sound: 7
Sound effects of pieces walking, attacking, using spells, etc. sound right on par with what the NES was capable of. Nothing too inventive or outlandish, and there's no music either.

Gameplay: 5
This is where the game suffers. There are several difficulties of play, as well as a two player mode if you don't like the computer (despite what the dingbat reviewer before me had to say! Press select to see the menu options), but the 3D fights is what makes this game fun. Unfortunately, it's completely offset by how the pieces take forever to move.

Overall: 6
I say, give this game a spin if you're looking to spice up your Chess nights with hilarious action, but don't forget to use frame skip to get past all the boring stuff. If I weren't emulating this, it wouldn't be a lot of fun.

That's pretty much it.

This game was originally a computer game and was ported to the NES, I believe. Im scoring this game compared to other games around 1990. And for 1990, this game is pretty bad.

Graphics: 3
The graphics are pretty bland for 1990. The whole game pretty much just uses four colors, awful. The battle sequences are extremely simple compared to the PC port. Sometimes you cant even tell what they are doing. The entire game is 3 different screens(title, game board, battle sequence).

Sound: 6
Sound is just a little above average. Theres music on the intro at least, and the game has fairly original sounds, not reused stuff from other games. The sound is pretty much the only thing that was almost accurately ported over to the NES.

Gameplay: 2
This is probably what brings the overall score down the most. The gameplay is very bad. It takes forever just to move your pieces around because you have to wait for other pieces to move out of the way. Most of the game is probably just waiting for the darn piece to move. There is no skill level adjustment for the computer, so youre essentially playing the same opponent every time. Worst of all, NO TWO PLAYER! This is a one player game. This takes the replay value down to about 0. The only good thing I can say about this game is that the computer AI is decent.

Overall: 2
This game is well below standard for NES games coming out in 1990. The game could have been as great as the computer port but it seems that so little effort was put into this game.

The END :)
